Harvest for the Hungry

All Worship Services November 21 & 22, 2009

Is the thought of eradicating hunger in the local Lima area exciting to you?

It can be done, and our community can take a leading role in this effort!!!

Last year area businesses and professionals, along with Shawnee United Methodist Church and St. Charles Catholic Church, raised over two million meals for distribution by the

WEST OHIO FOOD BANK.

More than 150,000 local people are served annually by its 200 member agencies in Allen and the surrounding 10 counties. With this bleak economic situation, more people, especially women and children, are relying on the food bank for their meals. Therefore, it is more important than ever for us to contribute generously to this cause.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

If you would like to contribute to this worthwhile cause, you can send a check (with "Harvest for the Hungry" on the memo line) to Shawnee United Methodist Church, 2600 Zurmehly Road, Lima, OH  45806 by Monday, November 16.

All contributions are tax deductible.

Haiti

In 1992, Shawnee embarked upon what is now its top priority, the alleviation of suffering and provision of hope for the people of northern Haiti. Currently, Shawnee is in partnership with the Victory Christian Center, to provide education, medical treatment, microeconomic loans, and economic opportunity for people who live in and around the village of Borde, Haiti. Shawnee is also a partner with Living Hope Mission which has built churches and schools, initiated nutritional programs and education, and basic medical care in isolated areas all over northern and central Haiti. If you would like more information on our work in Haiti, would like to travel with us as we serve there, or would like to make some other contribution to this ministry, please contact Charlotte Hefner at charlotte@shawneeumc.com

Angel Tree

Christmas is a difficult time for families torn apart by parent incarceration. Angel Tree is a program where we provide gifts for Lima area children. Each child receives an outfit and a toy that we wrap and Man to Man delivers. Look for the Christmas tree in the Commons during December or contact the church office at 419.991.4806.

Epiphany Prison Ministries

Incarcerated teens earn the privilege of attending a spiritual weekend with a special trained group of volunteers who offer the love of Christ in some simple, but powerful ways. For more information, contact Charlotte Hefner at 419.991.4806.

Hospital Care Team

Our care team puts the TLC into service as they visit local hospitals and bring a touch of healing and prayer. Training is provided along with a schedule convenient to your life.  Most team members visit the hospital twice a month. For more information, contact Charlotte Hefner at 419.991.4806.

A letter from Bryan:

People of Shawnee

Surely by now you’ve heard about the devastating earthquake that hit Port Au Prince. While I am relieved to report that our partners in the Cap Haitian area – Living Hope Mission and Victory Christian Church - sustained no damage, and that the orphanage led by the Nungester family in Port Au Prince received only moderate damage (all the children are well and safe), the rest of the news from Port Au Prince is dire.

If you’ve ever been to Haiti, you know that in the city everything is built with concrete block, mortar, and metal rebar. These structures were not designed to withstand even a moderate earthquake. Hence, the devastation in Port Au Prince has been unthinkable. If you’ve seen the pictures or video, you know how badly the people are hurting.
